Royal Mail: over 500 years of trusted delivery across the United Kingdom

Royal Mail has been at the heart of British life for over 500 years, connecting communities across the United Kingdom through one of the world's most trusted postal networks. With around 115,000 postmen and postwomen delivering to 32 million addresses six days a week, Royal Mail remains a vital part of daily life — from birthday cards and business documents to online shopping deliveries.

Royal Mail continues to invest in modernisation and innovation. New parcel sorting centres have been opened to handle growing parcel volumes more efficiently, and the company has been expanding its network of Parcel Postboxes — now over 1,200 across the UK — allowing customers to post pre-paid parcels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additional parcel locker installations are underway to give customers even more convenient collection and drop-off points in their local areas.

Digital convenience is a key focus. The Royal Mail app lets customers track deliveries in real time, set Safeplace instructions for their postie, rearrange deliveries, and receive live notifications. Click & Drop makes it easy to buy and print postage labels from home, compare services, and drop parcels at a Post Office or Parcel Postbox — often at better prices than over the counter.

Royal Mail offers a comprehensive range of tracked delivery services to suit every need. Tracked 24 aims for next-day delivery with full tracking, while Tracked 48 provides a more economical tracked option within two to three working days. For urgent or high-value items, Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm offers next-day delivery with compensation cover up to £2,500. All tracked services include online tracking, delivery notifications, and proof of delivery.

As part of its Universal Service Obligation, Royal Mail maintains Saturday delivery for 1st Class letters and parcels — a commitment that sets it apart from many competitors. Whether you're in a city centre or a remote Scottish island, Royal Mail delivers to every address in the UK at a single, uniform price.

Royal Mail is also committed to greener operations. The company has been rolling out a growing fleet of electric vehicles for delivery rounds and investing in sustainable practices across its sorting and distribution network. These efforts are part of a broader goal to reduce the environmental impact of postal operations across the country.

From 7 April 2026, Royal Mail stamp prices are as follows: a 1st Class stamp costs £1.80 and a 2nd Class stamp costs 91p for a standard letter up to 100g. Books of stamps remain available in packs of 4 and 8 for added convenience. Full pricing details, including large letters and parcels, can be found on the Royal Mail website.

Beyond deliveries, Royal Mail's posties play a treasured community role — often the only person to visit elderly or isolated residents each day. The UK's network of 11,500 Post Office branches also provides essential services including banking, bill payments, identity verification, and government services, making the Post Office a lifeline for communities across the country.

Frequently asked questions about Royal Mail

How do I redirect my mail when I move house?

You can set up a Royal Mail Redirection online at royalmail.com/redirection or by completing a form at your local Post Office branch. You can redirect mail for 3 months, 6 months or 12 months. Prices start from around £33.99 for 3 months. Apply at least 5 working days before your move to ensure the service starts on time. You will need to provide the names and dates of birth of everyone whose post you want redirected, plus proof of identity.

What should I do if my parcel was not delivered?

If your item has a tracking number, first check the status at royalmail.com/track-your-item. If the item shows as delivered but you haven't received it, check with neighbours and look for a "Something for you" card, which indicates a delivery attempt was made. If you still cannot locate the item, you can submit a claim via the Royal Mail website or contact Customer Services on 03457 740 740. You must wait 10 working days (for UK items) or 25 working days (for international items) before filing a claim.

How do I track a Royal Mail parcel?

Visit royalmail.com/track-your-item and enter your tracking reference number (found on your proof of posting receipt or dispatch notification email). You can also track items using the Royal Mail app, available for iOS and Android. Tracked services include Tracked 24, Tracked 48, Special Delivery Guaranteed and Royal Mail Signed For.

What is the difference between 1st Class and 2nd Class post?

1st Class aims to deliver your letter or parcel by the next working day, while 2nd Class aims to deliver within 2 to 3 working days. As of April 2026, a 1st Class stamp costs £1.80 and a 2nd Class stamp costs 91p for a standard letter up to 100g. Both classes cover the same destinations within the UK. 1st Class is ideal for urgent correspondence, while 2nd Class offers a more economical option for non-urgent mail.

What are the size and weight limits for letters and parcels?

Standard Letter: max 24cm x 16.5cm x 0.5cm, up to 100g.
Large Letter: max 35.3cm x 25cm x 2.5cm, up to 750g.
Small Parcel: max 45cm x 35cm x 16cm, up to 2kg.
Medium Parcel: max 61cm x 46cm x 46cm, up to 20kg.
Items exceeding these dimensions or weighing over 20kg cannot be sent via standard Royal Mail services and will need a specialist courier.

How do I make a complaint to Royal Mail?

You can submit a complaint through the Royal Mail Help & Support hub online, or by calling 03457 740 740 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm; Saturday, 8am to 1pm). Royal Mail aims to respond within 30 days for UK complaints or 90 days for international items. If you are not satisfied with the response, you can escalate your complaint to the Postal Redress Service (POSTRS) or contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

Does Royal Mail deliver on Saturdays?

Yes, Royal Mail currently delivers letters and parcels on Saturdays as part of its Universal Service Obligation. However, following Ofcom's 2025 review, reforms are being introduced that may reduce 2nd Class letter deliveries to alternate weekdays (Monday to Friday only), while 1st Class and parcel deliveries are expected to continue six days a week including Saturdays. Saturday collections from postboxes also take place, though with earlier collection times than weekdays.

Do I need customs declarations for international mail?

Yes, all items sent outside the UK require a customs declaration form (CN22 or CN23). You must provide an accurate description of the contents, the value in GBP, the weight, and whether the item is a gift or commercial goods. Since Brexit, this also applies to items sent to EU countries. You can complete customs forms online via Royal Mail Click & Drop or fill in a paper form at the Post Office. Failure to attach the correct customs label may result in your item being returned or delayed.

Useful tips for using Royal Mail

Use Royal Mail Click & Drop to buy and print postage labels from home. You can compare delivery services, pay online, and drop your pre-paid parcels at a Post Office, Parcel Postbox or your local postbox (if the item fits). This saves time and often provides better prices than buying postage over the counter.

Keep an eye on the last recommended posting dates for Christmas, typically announced in October. For 2025, the dates were 18 December for 2nd Class, 19 December for 1st Class, and 21 December for Special Delivery Guaranteed. International dates vary by destination, so check the Royal Mail website well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Royal Mail has over 1,200 Parcel Postboxes across the UK where you can post pre-paid parcels up to 44cm x 35cm x 16cm, 24 hours a day. These are ideal for returns and Click & Drop parcels. Find your nearest Parcel Postbox using the Royal Mail Parcel Postbox locator.

Set up a Safeplace via the Royal Mail app or website to tell your postie where to leave parcels when you're not at home — for example, behind a wheelie bin, in a porch or with a neighbour. Your delivery driver will take a photo as proof of delivery. You can also choose to have parcels delivered to a neighbour or held at your local Delivery Office.

The free Royal Mail app lets you track all your deliveries in one place, get live notifications, rearrange deliveries, set your Safeplace preferences, and even get proof of posting when you use a Parcel Postbox. You can link your Click & Drop account for a seamless experience.
